A bomb calorimeter is a robust, sealed system designed to withstand high pressure and temperature. Its main components include:

1.Bomb (Combustion Chamber):

  • A thick-walled, stainless steel cylindrical vessel designed to handle high-pressure reactions.
  • It has a gas-tight lid with a screw cap, two electrodes, and a valve for introducing oxygen.
  • A small crucible inside holds the sample (e.g., fuel or organic compound).

2. Calorimeter Bucket:

  • A metal container filled with a known volume of water (typically 2 liters) that surrounds the bomb.
  • The water absorbs the heat released during combustion.

3. Stirrer:

  • A mechanical or magnetic stirrer ensures uniform temperature distribution in the water.

4. Thermometer:

  • A high-precision thermometer (e.g., Beckmann thermometer or digital sensor) measures the temperature change of the water to the nearest 0.01°C.

5.Insulating Jacket:

  • A double-walled container surrounding the bucket, filled with air or water, to minimize heat loss to the environment.

6. Ignition System:

  • An electric circuit connected to the electrodes inside the bomb, which ignites the sample by passing a current through a thin wire (e.g., nichrome or platinum) in contact with the sample.

7. Oxygen Supply:

  • A high-pressure oxygen cylinder connected to the bomb’s valve to fill it with oxygen (typically 20–30 atm) to ensure complete combustion.

Working of a Bomb Calorimeter

  1. Sample Preparation:
  • A small, weighed sample (0.5–1 g) is placed in the crucible inside the bomb.
  • A cotton thread or ignition wire is attached to the sample and connected to the electrodes.

2. Assembly:

  • The bomb is sealed and filled with high-pressure oxygen through the valve.
  • The bomb is placed in the calorimeter bucket filled with a known quantity of water.

3.Ignition:

  • The system is assembled inside the insulating jacket, and the stirrer is activated to ensure even water temperature.
  • An electric current is passed through the ignition wire, which heats up and ignites the sample.

4.Combustion:

  • The sample burns completely in the oxygen-rich environment, releasing heat.
  • The heat is transferred to the surrounding water, raising its temperature.

5. Measurement:

  • The temperature rise of the water is recorded using the thermometer.

6. Cleanup

After cooling, the bomb is opened, and residues (e.g., ash or gases) are analyzed if needed. The bomb is cleaned for the next experiment.

A bomb calorimeter is used in the food industry to measure the energy content (calorific value) of food products. Its applications include:
